Michael Cooper’s Buyers Guide

Estate-grown at Ahipara, the 2020 vintage (4.5 stars, 91/100 Points) is a powerful, generous, characterful red with deep, fairly youthful colour and a fragrant, spicy, slightly earthy bouquet. Mouth-filling, it has concentrated, very ripe plum and spice flavours, a hint of liquorice, and good tannin backbone. Best drinking 2024+.

Sweetly ripe and attractively complex, the bouquet shows blackcurrant, dried herb, smoky bacon and cedar characters. The palate displays excellent weight and plump mouthfeel, well supported by juicy fruit flavours and fine-grained tannins, making it sturdy and robust. At its best: now to 2026 4.5 stars 90/100
