Reef View Syrah 2020

Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews

Deep, full, ruby-red, lighter on the rim. The nose is softly full and vibrant, with aromas of red plum, sour cherry and redcurrant melded with violet, spice and a hint of mealiness. Medium-bodied, aromas of red plum, sour cherry and redcurrant have a taut core, made more complex by a meaty nuance, violet, clove and pepper. Supple tannins contribute a dusty grip, supported by lively acidity and lend a pleasing fresh finish. This red-fruited Syrah is succulent, adorned by meaty nuance on a fresh palate. Match with duck and wild boar over the next 5 years. 13% alcohol. 17.5/20 points (88 points) Dec 2022 – 4 Stars

Michael Cooper’s Buyers Guide

Estate-grown at Ahipara, the 2020 vintage (4 star) is a full-coloured, fresh and lively red. Medium to full-bodied, it is youthful, with berryish, spicy flavours, fresh acidity, and savoury notes adding complexity. Best drinking 2024+.

It’s generously expressed on the nose with dark plum, warm spice, tapenade and toasted nut aromas, followed by a flavoursome palate that’s ripe and supple. It’s silky and rounded with succulent fruit intensity and savoury nuances, finishing lingering and finely dry. At its best: now to 2026 4.5 stars¬† 91/100
